Biden mourns ‘devastation’ of bridge collapse at Georgia’s Sapelo Island

President Biden issued a statement mourning the “tragedy” after a bridge collapsed on Georgia's Sapelo Island, killing seven people.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the collapse of the ferry pier walkway on Sapelo Island, Georgia. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration of Gullah-Geechee culture and history was instead turned into a tragedy. It has turned into devastation.” Mr. Biden said: in a statement Saturday evening.

Authorities in Georgia say at least seven people have been killed after part of a ferry pier collapsed on Sapelo Island. The crowd had gathered for a celebration of the Gullah-Geechee community, descendants of the island's black slaves. Associated Press reported.

A local spokesperson said several people were taken to hospital after the collapse. He said the gangway on the pier collapsed, causing people to fall into the sea.

Biden said he and First Lady Jill Biden were mourning those who lost their lives in the collapse and those who are still missing.

“My team is in touch with state and local officials and we stand ready to provide any assistance that can help our communities,” Biden said. Authorities do not know what caused the dock to collapse and are investigating.

The boats did not collide and “there was no collision,” Natural Resources spokesman Tyler Jones said, according to the Associated Press.
