Hundreds of New York Times technical staffers went on strike Monday morning.
They plan to begin their protest at 9 a.m.
This could affect the New York Times' ability to report on election results.
The New York Times Technology Union, which represents hundreds of technical staff at the giant newspaper, went on strike on Monday, the day before Election Day.
The union said in a statement that its members will begin protesting daily in front of Times headquarters starting at 9 a.m. Monday, The New York Times reported.
The planned walkout comes after a September 10 vote to stage a strike during the critical election week if no deal is reached. Anticipation and interest in the 2024 election is at an all-time high, and The New York Times has the largest online subscription of any American newspaper and is one of the most trafficked news websites.
The paper said the Tech Guild's 600 members are responsible for the back-end systems that power the paper's extensive digital operations. The walkout could affect the newspaper's ability to report on the election results in the presidential race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, dominate national headlines, and 2025 Washington. It could also affect hundreds of House races and dozens of Senate races that will determine who takes control.

Negotiations continued late Sunday, but there were still disagreements over issues such as a “just cause” clause that protects workers from being fired for reasons unrelated to misconduct, pay increases and return-to-work policies, the Times reported. Times Inc. management told workers Sunday that it was offering workers a 2.5 percent annual raise, a minimum 5 percent raise for promotions, and a $1,000 recognition bonus.
