The Fox News Decision Desk predicted that Republicans would regain the Senate majority in 2025 once the 119th Congress is sworn in.
Republicans officially won enough Senate seats in the 2024 elections to take back the majority from Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York has been leading the Senate since 2021.

All Republicans seeking re-election are in relatively safe states, and the party is almost certain to win West Virginia to replace retiring Sen. Joe Manchin (Idaho-Virginia). If West Virginia wins and all incumbents seeking re-election remain in office, Republicans would already have 50 senators.
Democrats were in an even more difficult position, with Manchin expected to lose his seat and facing a close race for outgoing independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's Arizona Senate seat.

The Democratic Party had a majority of only 51 members, compared to the Republican Party, which held a 49-member meeting.
The party has many vulnerabilities that mean it cannot afford to lose virtually any election in 2024.
What made it even more difficult for Democrats to maintain a majority in the 2024 election was the sharp decline in split voting. In some states, voters were expected to choose one party and vote for the candidate in that column at the bottom of the ballot, so the race was very likely to be decided by the winner of the presidential election.
