Kamala Harris Can Still Become First Female President — If Biden Resigns

Vice President Kamala Harris could still become the first female president of the United States, but only if President Joe Biden resigns.

On Tuesday, Harris suffered a decisive loss to former President Donald Trump (now president-elect), dashing hopes that a woman would finally break through the glass ceiling and reach the Oval Office. But it's still possible if Biden keeps his promise to be an “interim” candidate and stands aside for Harris.

Otherwise, Biden will appoint Harris to the ignominious task of presiding over the Senate during the January 6 certification of Donald Trump's victory. And American women may wait years for their next chance.

Already, many critics say Mr. Biden should have resigned months ago when it became clear he lacked the mental and physical stamina to carry out the job. Despite Democrats removing Biden from the top presidential race in July, ostensibly citing infirmity, amid a slumping U.S. economy and wars around the world that threaten to turn into a global conflagration. , Republicans couldn't believe it when they kept Biden in the White House.

One person said to be adamantly opposed to Biden's resignation is his wife, first lady Dr. Jill Biden, who attended the first presidential primary debate in Miami, Florida in 2019. Biden didn't like Harris after she called him a racist at a meeting. Losing Harris may deepen that resentment.

Additionally, the first lady attended several Oval Office and Cabinet meetings. She may be reluctant to let go of her influence — at least if her family is involved or has been involved, including her son Hunter Biden's plans to spread influence. Until he is pardoned for the various crimes he may have committed.

Nevertheless, Kamala Harris has a point to make. She is the first female vice president. She will be the first black woman and Indian woman to hold the top job. Her husband, Doug Emhoff, will be the first Second Gentleman. It would be a milestone that would reward her millions of supporters and inspire a generation of young American women.

Joe Biden can make that happen.

If she doesn't, there is the even more distant prospect of removing Biden for incompetence under the 25th Amendment, which would require Harris to publicly defy Biden with the consent of a majority of the Cabinet.

Biden could make this easier. He has a chance to make history on his way out.

Only he can do that.
