Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has finally appeared in public to address supporters after Democrats suffered a crushing defeat across the board in the 2024 elections.
The Harris campaign declined to comment after it became clear Tuesday night that former President Donald Trump was headed for a historic victory. Harris also refused to address supporters at a scheduled speech at Howard University, with disappointed audience members sent home instead.
“We must accept the results of this election.”
Harris appeared on Wednesday afternoon to give a concession speech to a cheering but sad-looking crowd.
“The outcome of this election is not what we hoped for, not what we fought for, not what we voted for, but the light of America's promise will always burn bright,” she said. .
The Democratic candidate's voice cracked and he choked several times during his speech.
“Don't despair. This is not the time to throw up your hands. This is the time to roll up your sleeves,” Harris said. “I know that together we can build for freedom, justice, and a future.”
“We must accept the results of this election. Earlier today I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory,” she continued. “I also told him that I would support him and his team in the transition and ensure a peaceful transfer of power.”
Some in the audience booed when they heard Trump's name, but applauded the transition.
NBC reported Harris did not prepare a victory or concession speech on Election Day because her campaign believed it would take time to tally the results.
Trump campaign communications director Stephen Chan confirmed the call in a short statement.
“President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone earlier today and she congratulated Mr. Trump on his historic victory.” said Mr. Chong. “President Trump recognized Vice President Harris' strength, professionalism and tenacity during her campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of uniting the country.”
