South Carolina’s Ashlyn Watkins returns to practice, suspension lifted after criminal charges dismissed

Criminal charges against Ashlyn Watkins were dropped on Nov. 1, according to court records.

The South Carolina basketball star was arrested in late August on charges of assault, battery and kidnapping.

Shortly after his arrest, Watkins learned he had been suspended from the team. The junior from Columbia, South Carolina, was allowed to continue attending classes.

The University of South Carolina released a statement Wednesday confirming that the forward has returned to practice.

“With the charges dismissed, South Carolina junior forward Ashlyn Watkins returned to team activities at today's practice.” statement Said.

Watkins does not train with the team and was not included in the group that traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit the White House in September to commemorate last season's national championship.

She wasn't even there for the top-ranked Gamecocks, who opened their season with a 68-62 win over the University of Michigan on Monday night in Las Vegas.

Watkins led the Southeastern Conference in blocks last season with 91 and was the only player in program history to record two dunks (as a freshman and sophomore).

Watkins is expected to take over the post from Camila Cardoso, who was the team's leading scorer and rebounder last season. Cardoso was selected by the Chicago Sky in the first round of the WNBA Draft.

South Carolina will play North Carolina State on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
