Boise State’s Latrell Caples suggests opponents focus on ruining teammate Ashton Jeanty’s Heisman hopes

Boise State wide receiver Latrell Caples offered his thoughts on the game plan the Broncos faced this season.

From Caples' perspective, opposing teams have expended considerable energy implementing methods that they hope will slow down running back Ashton Giunty. While defensive coordinators certainly have their eyes on Giunty, the receiver believes teams are also being tempted by the opportunity to crush the running back's Heisman Trophy dreams.

“We're playing a conference team,” Caples said. “They're trying to hold back a little bit and prevent Ashton from winning the Heisman. Overall, we're trying to win games, so we're going to win games by executing our fundamentals at a higher level. ”More than them. ”

Giunty is in the midst of one of the most productive seasons in recent college football history. Giunty has 1,525 rushing yards on 190 carries in eight games so far this season.

There's also a chance that Giunty could surpass Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record of 2,628 yards. Sanders made his mark in 1988, his last season at Oklahoma State. Sanders won the Heisman Trophy in 1988 and was the third overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft.

Caples noted that he believes the opposing team is being sold and winning actual football games is not their top priority. The paper cited the number of players coaches are placing in the box to disrupt the running game.

“They're not trying to win, so I'd say that,” Caples said. “You can't win by putting nine guys in the box every play.”

Caples appears to be benefiting from the increased attention directed by Genty. He had a team-leading 90 receiving yards and three touchdowns in last week's 56-24 win over San Diego State.
