Rep. Dave Schweikert (R-Ariz.) is the projected winner of Arizona's 1st Congressional District, according to The Hill/Decision Desk headquarters.
Schweikert, who has represented parts of Phoenix and Scottsdale in Arizona for more than a decade, won his eighth term in Congress on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Amish Shah.
Political commentators consider this race to be one of the most competitive in the Grand Canyon State, representing a major battleground this cycle. The seat has been seen as a banner seat because the region has a high percentage of college-educated suburban voters.
Former President Trump is the leading Republican candidate, and the incumbent has gained momentum by narrowly winning reelection in the 2022 midterm elections. Prior to the last election, he moved from the state's 6th Congressional District to the 1st Congressional District.
Mr. Schweikert, 62, was also confronting certain factors that could work against him, including the abortion bill on the ballot and the controversy surrounding Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake. district pocket
