Dem Sen. Jacky Rosen re-elected in Nevada, securing pivotal battleground seat

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Nevada Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen won reelection over Republican Sam Brown in a close but unusually quiet battleground race.

The first-term senator has advocated for abortion rights and positioned herself as a non-ideological politician, a formula that also worked well for the reelection of the state's senior state senator, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, two years ago. I went.

Mr. Brown easily won the Republican primary with Mr. Trump's support, but lost significantly during the campaign, leaving Mr. Rosen to dominate the airwaves for months.

Rosen, a former Las Vegas-area synagogue president and computer programmer, ran ads touting himself as an independent who doesn't listen to “party leaders.”

Analysts say Nevada has a history of supporting serious senators who receive funding from Washington.

Rosen also highlighted his efforts to help expand broadband Internet access and connect Las Vegas to Southern California with light rail.

And she accused Brown of opposing abortion rights, despite his statements that he respects the choice of Nevada voters decades ago to legalize abortion. He said he supports a nationwide abortion ban.

This year, voters passed a bill that would enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution. Voters would have to approve the amendment again in 2026 to amend the constitution.

The Senate race has received relatively little national attention for much of the campaign, a sharp contrast to the presidential race, where Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris targeted the state and its six electors. is doing. The Republicans' strong early performance led to an influx of conservative money in the final stages, but Mr. Brown was completely unable to fight back.

Brown, who was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in Afghanistan, was seriously injured by an improvised explosive device there in 2008 and endured 30 surgeries to recover. In campaign ads, he repeatedly said his face was deeply scarred by the attack.

He is also the founder of a medical company serving veterans.

Brown previously unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination to run against Cortez Masto in 2022.

All four incumbent members of the U.S. House of Representatives from Nevada (three Democrats, one Republican) also won reelection this year.
