FEMA Says It Has Fired Employee Who Directed Disaster Crew to Ignore Homes with Trump Signs

Biden-Harris Federal Emergency Management Agency Dean Criswell on Saturday told federal disaster relief officials to ignore a home in Lake Placid, Florida, with a Trump sign in the wake of Hurricane Milton. announced that they had advised the Survivor Support Team.

In a post about X, Criswell said:

Every day, more than 22,000 FEMA employees adhere to FEMA's core values and are dedicated to helping people before, during, and after disasters, often joining families to support disaster survivors. sacrificing your time.

Recently, FEMA officials departed from these values by advising survivor assistance teams not to visit homes with yard signs supporting President-elect Trump. This clearly violates FEMA's core values and principles of assisting people regardless of their political affiliation.

This was reprehensible. We want to be clear to all employees and the American public: This type of behavior and behavior will not be tolerated at FEMA and you will be held accountable if you violate these standards of conduct.

We take seriously our mission to help everyone before, during and after a disaster. The employee was terminated and we referred the matter to the Office of the Special Counsel. We will continue to do our best to prevent something like this from happening again.

The shooting occurred shortly after the Daily Wire reported Official Marni Washington, 38, announced that she had ordered disaster relief workers to detour around the homes of Trump supporters to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Milton.

Washington, who led Highland County's Disaster Survivor Assistance Team, was involved in an encounter with rescue workers in Lake Placid, Florida, as they worked to identify residents eligible for federal assistance. In a group chat, he instructed them to “avoid houses promoting President Trump.”

Multiple government officials told the Daily Wire that Washington also conveyed this message verbally.

Employees told the outlet that “at least 20 homes with President Trump signs and flags” were removed in late October and November, roughly the same time as the final weeks of the 2024 presidential election. .

Images shared by the Daily Wire show homes being jumped over and workers placing signs on government systems: “President Trump Signs Don't Trespass by Leadership,” “Stop Trump Flags by Leadership,” and “Trump Signs.” It can be seen that messages such as “Trump” are written on it. Signatures and contact from instructors are prohibited. ”

“It is unclear whether similar guidance has been issued elsewhere in the country,” the report said.

“We know we're short-staffed, but we thought we could help and make a difference,” one employee told the outlet. I was told to discriminate. It's almost unbelievable that someone in the federal government would think that's okay.”

The employee added that she felt it was wrong to discriminate against Trump supporters when they are “at their most vulnerable.”

“I volunteered to help the victims, not to discriminate against them,” the employee told the outlet. “It didn't matter if people were black, white, Hispanic, Trump supporters, Harris supporters. Everyone was entitled to the same amount of aid.”

In a whistleblower complaint filed with DHS, one employee wrote: “If my employees suffered damage or lost power for more than 36 hours, it was my duty to inform them of the benefits available to them through FEMA.”

The employee added, “This conduct raises serious concerns of discrimination against U.S. citizens based on their political views…” These actions not only undermine the integrity of our government institutions and create a hostile work environment for people of different political beliefs, but they threaten our nation's very democracy. ”

An employee told The Daily Wire that the guidance was first announced verbally by the Washington administration on Oct. 22, about two weeks before the election, and then just about a week before the election. It was announced again in a group chat on October 27th.

President Trump's guidance to avoid homes with signs and flags was removed a few days later, but by October 30, she was reportedly walking around following the guidance and meeting with other FEMA administrators. Afterwards, he denied that his house was off limits.

Washington did not respond to inquiries from The Wire. Employees told the outlet that as of press time, he had not been disciplined for his coaching, but had been transferred to another county in Florida.

The U.S. government's guidance comes amid criticism of the slow response after Hurricane Helen hit Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. It took six days for federal disaster relief workers to reach North Carolina after the hurricane struck.

It took nearly two weeks for FEMA to arrive in Lone Mountain, Tenn., located in Carter County, where Trump's approval rating stood at 81% on Tuesday, according to the Daily Wire.

Highlands County, where Mr. Washington served as head of FEMA's disaster survivor assistance unit, had a 70% approval rating for Trump on Tuesday.
