JD Vance, First Marine to Become VP, Wishes ‘Fellow Marines’ Happy Birthday

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, the first Marine to serve as vice president, celebrated the 249th birthday of the United States Marine Corps on Sunday with his fellow Devil Dogs.

“Happy Birthday to all my Marines! 249 years to come!” he posted on X.

Vance, 40, served as a noncommissioned combat correspondent in the Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007. He retired from the Marine Corps as an E-5.

He served in Iraq for six months and received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Iraq Operations Medal, Marine Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and National Defense Medal.

According to Military.com, the last vice president to enlist was Al Gore, who served in the Army.

Vance wrote in his memoirs: hillbilly elegy, “The Marine Corps challenged me to think strategically about these decisions and taught me how to do that.”

“When I joined the Marines, it was partly because I wasn't ready to enter adulthood. I didn't know how to balance a checkbook, let alone fill out a financial aid form for college. “Now I know exactly what I want from my life and how to get there,'' he wrote.
