Former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed that the Virginia Supreme Court “disregarded the people’s will” by nullifying a Democratic initiative to redraw the state’s congressional districts ahead of the midterms.
In a post on X, Harris suggested that the ruling “aids” President Donald Trump’s attempts to “manipulate” the forthcoming midterm elections. She mentioned that Democrats feel a sense of “justified anger” yet are determined to “continue the fight to restore the people’s power.”
“Last month in Virginia, citizens expressed their preferences at the polls and supported a new Congressional map,” Harris stated. “Today, the Virginia Supreme Court dismissed the will of the people and overturned a democratically chosen map.”
“This ruling will strengthen Donald Trump’s efforts to undermine the 2026 election and the Republican Party’s ongoing attack on voting rights,” Harris continued. “We have every reason to be upset, but we won’t back down. Our fight to reclaim people’s power must go on.”
This post followed the Virginia Supreme Court’s 4-3 decision that determined the legislative method used to advance the redistricting proposal “was in violation of Article 12, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution.”
“On March 6, 2026, the Virginia General Assembly presented to the voters a constitutional amendment authorizing partisan gerrymandering of federal congressional districts,” the ruling stated. “We determine that the legislative procedure used to promote this proposal violates Article 12, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution.”
In April, voters participated in a redistricting referendum, which intended to revise the congressional maps from a configuration of six Democratic and five Republican districts to a more skewed arrangement of ten Democratic and one Republican district.
While Republicans, including former Governor Glenn Youngkin and Trump, cheered the Virginia Supreme Court’s ruling, Democrats like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries contended that the court’s decision ignored the voices of millions in Virginia.
“Over 3 million Virginians participated in free and fair elections, but the state Supreme Court chose to dismiss their voices, disenfranchise them, and breach their due process rights,” Jeffries said in a statement. “Reversing the entire election outcome is an unprecedented and undemocratic move, and it cannot be accepted.”
