Kevin Costner defends Liz Cheney

Actor Kevin Costner defended Liz Cheney on Monday, saying the former Wyoming Republican congresswoman should be praised for her public service.

“I expect people in government to do the right thing. Public service is public service. It's not your career. It's not your ego. Your four years are your four years,” the ex said. The “Yellowstone” star said during a live performance, City hall version of SiriusXM's “Michael Smerconish Program.”

Cheney faced criticism from President-elect Trump just days before her Election Day victory. She denounced his remarks, in which he called her a “war hawk” from the comfort of Washington, D.C.

“Let's give her a rifle and fire nine barrels,” Trump said. “Let's see what she thinks about it. With a gun pointed at her face.”

Cheney has been one of Trump's biggest critics and has voiced support for Vice President Kamala Harris. She criticized Trump after a large number of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Costner endorsed Cheney ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. That year, Cheney shared a photo of the actor wearing a T-shirt that read, “I support Liz Cheney.”

“I'm so proud of Liz Cheney,” Costner said. “I found someone who was totally at odds with one side willing to stand up for her. We should celebrate her. We should protect her.”

“This woman should never be intimidated,” he added.

Mr. Cheney lost his re-election bid in the Republican primary to Representative Harriet Hageman, who was backed by Mr. Trump.
