Army vet Gabe Evans flips Colorado House district red

Colorado Congressman Gabe Evans (R) won the race for The Hill/Decision Desk Headquarters Project in Colorado's 8th Congressional District.

Evans, an Army veteran, defeated one-term Democratic Rep. Yadira Carabeo in a district that stretches from north Denver to Fort Collins, Colorado.

Republicans are eyeing the seat as a potential opportunity to win after Carabeo, the first Latina woman to serve in the state Legislature, failed to get more than 50% of the vote in her 2022 victory. was.

Republican lawmakers also cited voters' concerns about crime and immigration as a way to flip the seat as a way to maintain their House majority.

The 8th District is relatively new, being carved out after the Centennial State gained an additional seat after the 2020 Census. In the last election, the district supported President Biden by a nearly 5-point margin.

The poll, released less than a week before Election Day, showed the incumbent Democratic Party leader Evans, who is also Hispanic, with a 46% to 43% approval rating. In an Oct. 28 poll by Emerson College Polling/KDVR/KWGN/The Hill, each candidate received a 47% unfavorable rating.

The poll showed Mr. Caraveo narrowly leading Republican state legislators, with 48% support and 46% support, but nearly 7% remained undecided.

In a debate earlier this month, both candidates struggled to answer the moderator's questions.

Evans, who is backed by former President Donald Trump, was primarily pursued over corporal punishment in schools and Trump's comments about immigrants. Caraveo was also asked about his seemingly moderate stance on border security.

Hill/DDHQ identified the district as “Democratic-leaning” ahead of the election.
