Boston University Republicans called on the school's students and faculty to stand up against the “intimidation and hate speech” that has targeted conservative students since the election.
“You can't love your country only when you win. You can't love your neighbor only when you agree with it.”
Social media is choked with images and videos of liberals expressing anger and shock at President-elect Donald Trump's stunning electoral and likely popular vote victory. Unfortunately, some of that dissatisfaction is manifesting as “hate speech” against conservative students.
“The past few days have seen an escalation in attacks against Boston College's conservative students in the wake of President Donald Trump's reelection,” Boston College Republicans said in a statement.
“Conservative students are being targeted on social media and on campus, and are told they condone rape, sexism, racism, and every other 'ism' in the English dictionary. We can no longer stand by and watch as those who have lost their freedom publicly defame Britain's character – the students who voted for President Trump.”
The letter went on to call for unity, quoting President Joe Biden's post-election speech: “You can't love your country only when you win. You can't love your neighbor only when you agree.”
That statement is approved By the University of Massachusetts Republicans.
“As leaders of the BC Republican Party, we call on everyone in BC's communities to avoid excluding each other and dehumanizing those with whom we disagree. Instead, We encourage respectful political debate,” the group continued.
“The nation has spoken and it is time for our communities to come together around our shared values as Americans,” the letter concludes.
