CBS’s Gayle King to Hakeem Jeffries on 2024 Democrat Election Loss: ‘It Wasn’t Close’

On Tuesday's “CBS Morning,” host Gayle King told House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) that despite claims to the contrary, the 2024 election is “close.” ” I reminded him that this was not the case.

“We obviously have an interest in making the lives of ordinary Americans better, and that drives everything we do from a policy standpoint,” Jeffries said. , we must, of course, think about how we can better connect the policies that we have worked so hard to implement under the leadership of President Biden and Vice President Harris. , repairing crumbling bridges, roads, and tunnels and creating millions of good-paying union jobs. It's about putting people first. It's about policy, and it's about what happens. But we need to better connect why we do these things and how they improve the quality of life across America.”

Mr. King said, “I think you're still processing it, but were you stunned last Tuesday night?” I'm just curious. You know the lessons and all, but were you surprised by what happened? ”

“As Vice President Harris has said repeatedly, including at the convention, we knew going into the election, the election is close and will be close,” Jeffries said.

Dr. King interjected, “But we weren't even close.''

“At the end of the day, I think the popular vote is going to be a close one,” Jeffries said. “Because everything broke down at the presidential level regarding Donald Trump's direction, we're going to see an outcome in the electoral system that most people on the Democratic side didn't expect. I think it was.”
