On November 2nd, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich missed the game due to a “health issue.” It is currently reported that the undisclosed illness was a mild stroke.
On Wednesday, the Spurs released a statement detailing the incident.
“The San Antonio Spurs announced today that head coach Gregg Popovich has suffered a mild stroke,” the statement read. “This incident occurred on November 2nd at the Frostbank Center. Popovich has already begun a rehabilitation program and is expected to make a full recovery. At this time, there is no set date for his return to the sidelines. No. The organization would like to thank the broader community for providing the Popovich family with privacy and space during this time.”
Assistant coach Mitch Johnson took over coaching duties in Popovich's absence.
Popovich, 75, is the NBA's longest-serving coach. He won five NBA championships and was named Coach of the Year three times. They also won over 1,000 games in the regular season and over 90 games in the playoffs.
