Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) will become the third-ranking Senate Republican on Wednesday and win the race for conference president.
Cotton defeated Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) by a landslide margin of 35-18, Politico. report.
The primary responsibility of the conference chair is to support messaging for conference members and their staff. Cotton is known on the airwaves as one of Senate Republicans' biggest weapons.
“I am grateful for the support of my colleagues and the American people, the majority of whom have placed their trust in us,” Cotton tweeted. “We are ready to begin working to realize President Trump's policies of secure borders, lower prices, and a peaceful world.”
Ernst generously congratulated Cotton and others who would hold leadership positions in the future.

The conference chairman race was one of two held on Wednesday. Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota) defeated Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) as party leaders in early voting.
Cotton's predecessor as conference chair, Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), will succeed Thune as majority chair. Barrasso ran without resistance.
In addition, in the upcoming Congress, Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia) will be Chair of the Policy Committee, Senator James Lankford (R-Oklahoma) will be Vice-Chair of the Conference Committee, and Senator Tim Scott (Republican, South Carolina) holds a leadership position as committee chairman. Cotton may be hoping for more good news.
