A 60-year-old American tourist has been found “bludgeoned to death” at a luxury five-star hotel in Ireland, police said.
An unidentified American national was found unconscious on Tuesday in a hotel room at the luxury Ballyfin Demesne hotel in County Laois, Ireland's Garda Síochána said.
The victim was later pronounced dead by police.

Irish police arrested and detained a 30-year-old man on suspicion of assault.
According to the Irish Times, the suspect and victim were traveling together. The newspaper noted that the suspect is also American.
Police said a senior investigating officer had been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room had been set up at Portlaoise Garda Station. A family liaison officer will be appointed to support the deceased's family.
Police said an investigation is ongoing.

Ballyfin Demesne is a five-star hotel in Ireland where celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West stayed on their honeymoon in 2014.

Local independent councilor James Kelly told RTE that nearby residents were “shocked” to hear about the incident at the famous hotel.

“There will be a lot of staff from the area and they are completely shocked by what has happened here,” he said. “When I woke up this morning, I never expected this to happen.”
