Paris police chief Laurent Nunez announced on Friday that French police officers had arrested two people after a brief fan scuffle during a Nations League soccer match between France and Israel.
Nuñez said the jury “immediately quelled” a brawl inside the Stade de France national stadium on Thursday night.
“A fight started. We reacted very quickly and the incident was quickly brought under control,” the police chief told broadcaster France 2.
With the help of video evidence, officers immediately detained one person and arrested the other after the match, Nuñez said.
Approximately 10 minutes after the match kicked off as scheduled at 8:45 pm Paris time, a scuffle broke out above the stands behind the goal.
Some of those involved carried Israeli flags on their backs.
The cause of the altercation is unknown, and security intervened about a minute later.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw and there were no further incidents inside the stadium.
Police deployed thousands of officers and increased security after violence broke out in Amsterdam before and after the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Dutch authorities said the incident involved fans from both countries. The assault on Maccabi fans sparked outrage and was widely condemned as anti-Semitic.
