The health insurance open enrollment period has begun and will be available to individuals and families until they have a chance to secure health coverage for next year. The deadline to complete your selection is December 15th.
Health insurance does more than just pay for doctor visits. This is a financial safeguard that covers a wide range of services from preventive care to mental health services and chronic disease management.
“Health insurance is more than just medical coverage; it's a safety net for both your health and your finances,” said Heidi Castaneda, assistant vice president of small employer and consumer products at Select Health. states. “When the unexpected happens, having the right insurance allows you to focus on recovering from your illness rather than paying for treatment.”
Here are some tips to help you find the plan that's right for you.
Act now to protect your finances and health
Life can be unpredictable, especially when it comes to health.
Unexpected illness or injury can cause not only physical and mental stress, but also financial strain. Medical costs can quickly add up and place a huge burden on individuals and families. Health insurance is the key to avoiding that burden.
“Being uninsured not only risks significant financial burden, but it can also limit access to quality care when you need it most,” Castaneda says. “Ensuring coverage is essential to protect both personal health and financial security.”
Consider coverage for chronic conditions and mental health needs
Health insurance is essential for people managing chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Without the financial assistance of health insurance, routine care, medications, and treatments can be overwhelming.
“Living with a chronic illness is difficult enough without the added stress of massive medical bills,” Castaneda said. “Health insurance makes the medical care you need affordable and accessible.”
Mental health protection is also important. Many insurance plans, including Select Health, cover treatments, medications, and hospital care to help people get the support they need. Select Health Individual plans also allow members to access virtual mental health care at no out-of-pocket cost on most plans when they see an in-network provider.
“We're seeing positive changes in mental health coverage, making it easier for people to seek help,” Castaneda said. “This change reduces the financial barriers that often stand in the way.”
Prioritize preventive care
Preventive care, such as screenings and vaccines, can help detect and address potential health problems early. Many insurance plans cover these services at little or no out-of-pocket cost, making it easier to be proactive about your health.
“We are committed to helping our members stay healthy and live the healthiest lives possible. That's why we identify potential health problems early and make health a priority. We provide preventive health insurance to patients,” Castaneda said.
Choose the right plan for you and your family's needs
When choosing a health insurance plan, start by evaluating your medical needs, including regular doctor visits, medications, and upcoming surgeries.
Be careful with your budget. Plans with lower premiums may seem attractive, but they can result in higher out-of-pocket costs later on. Consider all out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
“Open enrollment is a great opportunity to take a fresh look at your health insurance,” Castaneda suggested. “Consider both your current needs and potential future needs. If your plans no longer fit your circumstances, now is the time to consider better options.”
Your local insurance agent can also guide you through your options and ensure you find the right plan for your needs and budget. For personalized assistance, contact your trusted agent or Select Health representative.
Consider additional benefits and added value of health insurance
When choosing the right medical plan, it is important to consider not only the main benefits, but also the additional benefits that come with the policy. Select Health offers several features that many members may not be aware of, but that can make a big difference for individuals and families.
Member discount: Select Health members receive discounts on services such as LASIK, acupuncture, and tattoo removal.
Healthy beginnings: The program supports pregnant women, especially mothers with high-risk pregnancies, by providing access to a nurse care manager and free resources such as pregnancy and parenting books.
Member Supporter: Select Health Member Advocates help members find the right health care provider or specialist, including accessing language services and arranging appointments.
Intermountain Connect Care: You can treat common conditions like fever, joint pain, and minor burns from your smartphone or computer, and see in-network providers for virtually $0 co-pay on most plans.
Wellness benefits: Select Health offers a wellness rewards program that rewards you for up to $240 per person, or $580 per family, each year when you maintain healthy habits like going to the gym or meeting your daily step goal .
“These additional benefits really improve the overall healthcare experience,” Castaneda said. “Many members are unaware of these benefits, but they provide valuable support in managing their health.”
Act now before registration ends on December 15th
Open enrollment is a limited time period to secure insurance for the following year. After the period ends, you will only be able to enroll if you have experienced a life event such as marriage or childbirth.
In Utah, open registration will be open until Dec. 15 for policies that go into effect on Jan. 1, and the deadline will be extended to Jan. 15 for policies that begin on Feb. 1.
“Don't wait and don't risk going without coverage,” Castaneda urged. “Use this time to consider your options and have peace of mind that you are protected.”
