The annual competition for the best frozen hairstyle has been cancelled.
The official “Hair Freezing Contest” will be held at Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs in Yukon Territory, Canada.
Participants can step into naturally warm water and “create the shape of wet hair that stands on end as it freezes,” SWNS reported.

Springs spokesperson Satyam Jain said the contest was postponed from last winter to this year.
“I took some photos last year, but not enough to make it a proper contest,” Jain added.

According to SWNS, Jain said the contest typically begins anytime between December and March, as soon as temperatures drop below -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit).
“I think climate change is definitely a factor. It would have to be at least -20C for your hair to freeze like in the photo,” Jain said.

The current temperature in Yukon is 23°C (32°F), which is far from the temperature you need to achieve a frozen hairstyle.
According to SWNS, Yukon University's 2022 report states that “climate change could cause temperatures in the region to rise by 0.7 to 3.7 degrees Celsius over the next 50 years, resulting in warmer winters.”

In 2020, 288 participants in the contest achieved the Guinness World Record for “Largest Frozen Hair Contest.”

“The contest selected five winners: “Best Male Award,'' “Best Female Award,'' “Best Group Award,'' “Most Creative Award,'' and “People's Choice Award.'' “The winners in each category received $2,000 and a free bath at the Takhini Hot Springs facility,” the Guinness website states.
