‘America Deserves Better’ than Trump Cabinet Picks

“America is in a much better position” than President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press.”

Host Kristen Welker asked, “I want to hear about the report that the House Ethics Committee was planning to vote to confirm President-elect Trump's nominee to be the next attorney general, former Congressman Matt Gaetz. Chairman Johnson is currently , says the report should not be made public. What do you think about Chairman Johnson's statement?

“Of course it should be made public,” Jeffries said. “And it's not just Democrats who are saying that. Senate Republicans have made it clear who the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are, or even the entire chamber, who are the nominees for attorney general. We've seen many times that the Senate, as the Senate and its equivalent government agencies, want access to all the information available to them so they can decide whether they're qualified for the job. There's a clear responsibility to function and to have checks and balances. It's as American as baseball, motherhood, and apple pie.”

He added: “Here's what I have to say about some of the nominees the President-elect has made, including the one mentioned by Debbie Wasserman Schultz. We promised the American people that we would have the best economy, the best border security, the best government. The question that has to be asked is, is this the best we can do?Considering some of these candidates, this is… , is that the best that America can offer in a moment like this, with so many challenges facing us? Of course not. America deserves better. We expect them to do their job and vet these candidates and ensure that those who meet the basic qualification levels are approved and others are rejected.”
