Size of slim Republican House majority hangs on 5 uncalled races

Republicans hold a slim majority in the House, but the size of that margin won't be known until the final five undecided races are called.

As of Monday morning, five House races had yet to be called: Alaska, California, Iowa and Ohio. The current balance of power is 218 seats for Republicans and 212 seats for Democrats.

Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Mary Sattler Peltola He is running behind Republican entrepreneur Nick Begich in a close race in Alaska's large congressional district.

As of Monday morning, Mr. Begich had 48.7% of the vote and Mr. Peltola had 46.1%, holding a nearly 3-point lead. The vote count was 155,120 to 146,782, with approximately 98% of votes counted.

California

13th Congressional District

Republican Rep. John Duarte leads former Democratic state Rep. Adam Gray in California's 13th Congressional District, but the hotly contested race has not yet been called as of Monday morning.

The vote count was about 86%, with Duarte leading 50.6% to 49.4%. The pair are separated by just over 2,000 votes.

45th Congressional District

In the 45th District, Democratic challenger Derek Tran maintained his lead over incumbent Republican Rep. Michelle Steele. Mr. Steele was leading by a few hundred votes late last week, but Mr. Tran now leads by just 36 votes.

About 94% of votes were counted in the district.

1st Congressional District

Incumbent Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has a lead of less than 1% over challenger Christina Bohannan, with 99% of votes counted. Miller-Meeks' lead is just under 1,000 votes.

Democrats privately unhappy with Pelosi's 'harmful' post-election comments: 'She needs a seat'

Bohannan called for a recount in an effort to oust Miller-Meeks. The Associated Press has not yet called the race because it was close enough to potentially prompt a recount. Miller-Meeks declared victory and said he was confident in his lead.

9th Congressional District

With 99% of votes counted, Democratic incumbent Marcy Capture leads Republican challenger Derek Melin by less than one point. As of Monday morning, Kaptur had received just over 1,000 votes.

Races with margins of 0.5% or less result in automatic recounts in Ohio.
