Foul play ruled out month after body of Walmart employee found inside store’s walk-in oven

A month after a Walmart employee's body was found inside a walk-in oven at a store in eastern Canada, police have determined her death is not suspicious.

The Halifax Police Department released a statement saying the investigation into the death of a 19-year-old woman found inside a walk-in oven at a Halifax Walmart on Oct. 19 was not suspicious and there was no evidence. of foul play.

“We do not believe any other persons were involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman's death,” Halifax Regional Police Officer Martin Cromwell announced Monday in a video update on the department's Facebook page.

Cromwell added that he didn't have many details to share and didn't expect any other updates anytime soon.

“We recognize the public interest in this case and the questions that will never be answered,” Cromwell said. “Please be mindful of the damage that public speculation can cause. This woman's loved ones are grieving.”

Police have not yet released the victim's name. However, the Gurdwara Maritime Sikh Association, an organization for Sikh immigrants, identified the woman as Gursimran Kaur.

The group also created a GoFundMe page, which is no longer operational, and raised more than $194,000 for Kaul's family.

“Gursimran Kaur was just 19 years old, a beautiful young girl who came to Canada with big dreams,” the website's post said.

Kaur and her mother had worked at Walmart for the past two years, according to the post.

Association officials said that on the night her daughter disappeared, Kaur's mother tried to look for her after not being able to contact her for an hour, but the association ignored her, believing she was helping a client.

Kaur's mobile phone was also reportedly unreachable.

“My mother started to panic as it was unusual for her cell phone to be turned off during the day. She asked the on-site administrator for help,” the post continued.

Tragically, hours later, her daughter's body was discovered inside a walk-in oven in the store's bakery.

“Imagine the fear your mother felt when she opened the oven and someone pointed it out to her,'' the association official explained. “The pain this family has suffered is unimaginable and indescribable.”

Kaur's father and brother were reportedly in India at the time of her death.

“Investigators met with the family to share this latest information and offer their condolences,” Halifax police said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
