Sending Air Marshals to Border Doesn’t Hurt Air Security Because We Can Get Them Back if Needed

On Tuesday's “CBS Morning” broadcast, TSA Administrator David Pekoske said that sending air marshals to the border does not impact aviation safety and that if the TSA is able to send air marshals. “If we need to bring it back quickly, we can bring it back right away,” he said. They came right back. ”

co-host Tony Dokoupil asked. “People want security in the skies. People also want border security. This was a big issue during the election period, and clearly the Trump administration is emphasizing border security. TSA How can you do that and take care of people in the air?”

Pekosuke replied: “Well, we have sent a limited number of air marshals to the southwest border, and we are working with Customs and Border Protection under Border Security to do that based on certain criteria. Once a certain number of people cross the border, additional services will be added. And in fact, Federal Air Marshals are part of the law enforcement agency, and we primarily provide law enforcement support to the Border Patrol, so they're the primary border security force. They can accomplish their mission and we support them in their law enforcement efforts.”

Dokoupil then asked, “Do you expect that to continue?”

Mr. Pekosuke replied: “We've been doing that since 2019. In fact, once we hit that threshold, we get a request. And if we have the capacity, that's an assumption, we will provide the resources. But , it is always premised on the fact that if you need to return it immediately, you will return it immediately.”

Pekoske added: “There was no impact on aviation safety.”

Mr. Pekoske said at the beginning of the interview that there is not enough investment in government agencies.
