An investigation is underway in Kentucky after two police officers were shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle that had been reported stolen.
Col. Emily McKinley, deputy chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department, said in a press conference that the incident occurred in Louisville's Smoketown neighborhood around 8 p.m. Tuesday, when officers from the 4th Division stopped a stolen vehicle in the 400 block of Roselane Street. He said it occurred when the incident occurred.
There were multiple people in the car, and one of the occupants began fighting with two officers over a firearm.

The officer and suspect were shot during an altercation.
Louisville police confirmed at X that one officer was shot in the hand and another was shot in the leg. Neither injury was life-threatening.
The officers, whose identities have not been identified, were taken to University Hospital. The suspect, whose identity has also not been released, was taken to Jewish Hospital and is in stable condition, McKinley said.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg briefly attended a news conference Tuesday night to share that he had visited both officers in the hospital, adding that they are “doing well and on the road to recovery.” .
“I would like to extend a huge thank you to both officers and all members of the LMPD who responded.” [sic] We work hard every day to keep all of us safe throughout our community,” Greenberg said.
He also thanked the University of Louisville Hospital, where both officers were taken, for their “tremendous efforts.”
