Officer Wounded After NYC Shootout Leaves ‘Career Criminal’ Dead

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, NYPD officers engaged in a shootout with 57-year-old Gary Worthy, killing the man police described as a “career criminal.”

Worthy, who was believed to be carrying a revolver, fired at NYPD officer Rich Wong, striking him in the thigh. Wong fired back and hit Worthy in the face.

Wong survived, but Worthy died from his injuries.

of new york post reported The confrontation between Mr Wong and Mr Worthy occurred on Tuesday night after officers were searching for him in relation to two robberies.

A bystander pointed out Worthy to police, and a gunfight ensued. A 26-year-old woman who was not involved in the gunfight was injured in the crossfire and is expected to survive.

Worthy “has 17 previous convictions, including murder,” is “on life parole for firearms possession,” and had just been released last week after being arrested on drug charges and resisting arrest.
