Fox's first appearance: Republican senators introduced a measure Thursday to eliminate the Department of Education after President-elect Donald Trump indicated he would do so during the 2024 campaign.
Sen. Mike Rounds (R.S.D.) introduced a bill in the Senate that would abolish the Department of Education and impose certain responsibilities and programs currently administered by various other departments. .
During his presidential campaign, Trump said, “One of the things I'm going to do very early on in my administration is close down the Department of Education in Washington, D.C., and bring all essential education and education-related operations back to the states.'' ” he said.

Some experts disputed his ability to do this, noting that he would need approval from Congress. But given the Republican trifecta in Washington, D.C., and Lowndes' bill, he might get it.
“The federal Department of Education has never educated a single student, and it is long past time to end this bureaucratic Department of Education that does more harm than good,” Lowndes said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital. ” “We all know that when it comes to education, local control is best. “I have been working for years to abolish the federal Department of Education, and I am pleased that President-elect Trump shares this vision, and I am committed to working with him and Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives to make this a reality. We look forward to working with the majority.'' The reality is that this bill is a roadmap to abolish the federal Department of Education, effectively changing the jurisdiction of these federal programs and making it very difficult to move into next year. “It's going to be important,” he continued.

Under the senator's plan, many Indigenous education programs would be transferred to the Department of the Interior, loan and grant programs would become the responsibility of the Treasury Department, and disability programs would be overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services. The program will be transferred to the Department of Labor, and the State Department will be responsible for the Fulbright-Hays program, which “supports overseas research and training efforts.”

The new bill comes after President Trump announced earlier this week that he plans to tap former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon to lead the Department of Education.
“I am thrilled to announce that former Small Business Administration Secretary Linda McMahon will serve as U.S. Secretary of Education,” he said in a statement about the selection.
