LAHAINA, Hawaii — Andrei Jakimovsky hit an off-balance layup with eight seconds left and Colorado College defeated the two-time national champions 73-72 at the Maui Invitational on Tuesday, handing it its second loss in two days. I smoked it.
A day after Huskies coach Dan Hurley was furious with the referees in a 99-97 overtime loss to Memphis, UW (4-2) defeated the unranked Buffaloes (5-1), who shot 62.5 percent in the second half. I couldn't shake off the loss.
With Colorado trailing 72-71 in the final minutes, Jakimowski drove to his right and absorbed contact from UW's Liam McNeely.
He tossed the ball against the glass and hit a good shot even as he fell to the floor.
Hassan Diarra missed a 3-point shot just before the buzzer sounded for University.
Elijah Malone and Julian Hammond III each scored 16 points for Colorado, and Jakimowski had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Huskies, who entered the tournament on a 17-game winning streak, led by nine points early in the second half, 40-32, but Colorado quickly closed the gap. McNeely led the University with 20 points.
