Robert said he and his two grandchildren, ages 4 and 14, were asleep in the back room when the robbers allegedly broke in through the front window of the store.

Robert said the robbers walked through the store, past shelves stocked with items such as expensive leather jackets, and headed into a back room where Robert and his grandchildren were sleeping.

Robert's 14-year-old grandson was awake at the time and heard the noise, so he “jumped” on Robert to wake him up and tell him there was someone in the store. Robert shed tears as he recalled that moment.

“I don't have time to think,” he said. “If he was eight feet away from me, he would have said, 'I have a gun.'”

But in that moment, Robert remembered that all he could think about was that if he didn't act, “the babies next to me were going to die.”

Robert said he couldn't sleep in the days after the shooting, fearing retaliation, but was grateful his grandchildren were still alive.
