Most Americans Hope to Avoid Political Talk at Thanksgiving

Trump voters are slightly more willing to talk about politics on Thanksgiving following President Trump's historic victory, but Americans overall prefer to avoid the topic altogether, according to CBS News. This is revealed in a new YouGov survey.

By party affiliation, 72% of voters who supported Vice President Kamala Harris and 62% of voters who supported President-elect Donald Trump said they wanted to avoid talking about politics on Thanksgiving. Trump supporters are slightly more likely than Harris supporters to want to discuss politics (38 percent vs. 28 percent).

According to the survey, 43% are willing to talk about politics with someone who voted the same way as them, but 57% still avoid the topic. Less than a third (31 percent) said they would discuss politics with people who have different views than them, and 69 percent said they avoided doing so.

Despite the clear differences between Trump and Harris voters, both share a similar appreciation for friends and family.

When survey respondents were asked, “What are you especially grateful for this year?'' 84% of Harris voters and 84% of Trump voters said “family and friends.'' 77% of Harris voters and 72% of Trump voters also said they were grateful for their “health.” Those who voted for Trump (69%) were more likely to say they were grateful for their “freedoms” than those who voted for Harris (52%).

When asked what they are grateful for this year, politics ranked last among all those surveyed.

Only 16% of Americans say they are grateful for “politics,” followed by “faith” at 49%, “peace” at 49%, “freedom” at 58%, “health” at 71%, and “good health.” ” accounted for 79%. Percentage of people who answered “family and friends.”

The survey was conducted among 2,232 U.S. adults from November 19 to 22, 2024. The margin of error is ±2.3 percentage points.
