The Mountain West Conference is under fire this week for naming transgender volleyball player Blair Fleming to its annual honorable mention list ahead of its upcoming tournament.
Fleming is a controversial male student who identifies as female and plays on San Jose State University's women's volleyball team. He was a central figure in the boycott and is accused of plotting to injure other players and of creating an atmosphere that was dangerous for both opponents and teammates.
One of Fleming's own teammates, Brooke Slusser, is suing the school and conference, alleging that Fleming conspired with an opponent to physically harm her during a game.
Five college teams forfeited games against SJSU to avoid playing Fleming. Opponents claim that Fleming feels more dangerous on the court because of the man's stronger physical characteristics.
After the honorable mention list was released, the Mountain West Conference, which is being sued for allowing Fleming to play, was criticized on social media.
Social media sparked an outpouring of criticism of the conference for including Fleming on the honor list.
