President-elect Trump said he had a “very productive” conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“I had a great conversation with Mexico's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.” President Trump posted on Wednesday Visit his Truth Social site. “She agreed to block immigration into the United States through Mexico, effectively closing the southern border.”
“We also discussed the large influx of drugs into the United States and what can be done to stop the United States from consuming these drugs,” his post said. “It was a very productive conversation!”
Sheinbaum acknowledged it was a “great conversation.”
“We discussed Mexico's strategy for the migration phenomenon and shared that the caravan has not arrived at the northern border because it is being cared for in Mexico,” she wrote in Spanish. Post on social platform X.
Sheinbaum said he also discussed security issues with Trump and strengthening cooperation on preventing fentanyl intake.
The call came just days after President Trump announced a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican goods on his first day in office.
The next day, Mr. Sheinbaum threatened to retaliate with his own tariffs against the United States. In her remarks, she said drugs are an American problem, not a Mexican problem.
He called retaliatory tariff deals “unacceptable” and said they would cause inflation and job losses for both countries. But Sheinbaum offered to speak to President Trump about the issue, noting that “dialogue is the best path to understanding.”
In his remarks, Scheinbaum said Mexico has taken significant steps to curb the flow of migrants arriving at the two countries' borders.
President Trump has been promising for months to impose tariffs on all imported goods. Economists have warned that the plan could cause commodity prices to soar across the country and household spending to rise.
