Jim Colwell, a deputy chief constable with Devon and Cornwall Police, has been suspended pending an investigation into allegations of breaching professional standards.
Alison Hernandez, the region's police and crime commissioner, confirmed that a compulsory referral would be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which would investigate the allegations.
Hernandez said an interim leadership structure would be announced in due course.
She said: “Unfortunately, it was my duty to suspend Jim Colwell A/CC and refer the matter to the IOPC. Suspension is a neutral act that allows for an independent and thorough investigation. , there is no indication that the allegations will be upheld and should not be seen as such.A/CC Colwell has 7 days to make representations to me regarding his suspension.
“Following the need to suspend a senior officer, I have informed Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioners of my decision this morning, and have confirmed my decision within the force, with the community and with partners on this matter. We fully understand that there may be concerns about the suspension. I share those concerns, and resolving leadership issues in the force remains my top priority. ”
Mr Colwell led the force in place of Chief Constable Will Kerr, who was suspended in July last year.
