Another highlight has been added to Matt Eberflus' ever-growing disaster history.
The Bears conceded a nearly 30-minute timeout after Caleb Williams was sacked with 33 seconds left in the game, resulting in a 23-20 loss to the Lions.
When Williams brought the ball up at the Lions' 41-yard line with about five seconds left, a long, incomplete pass would be the final play of the game.
In the CBS booth, Jim Nantz and Tony Romo criticized Chicago for a lack of urgency in its stunning comeback from a 16-0 halftime deficit to the Lions, 11-1.
“You better hurry, we've got a disaster going on here,” a distressed Nantz said on the CBS broadcast. “We're going to have to do something about it, and it comes down to this play. Incomplete. And the game is over. Completely screwed by the Bears at the end.”
“I can't believe they didn't take a timeout,” Romo added.
Williams rallied the Bears with three touchdowns in the second half, and could have tied the game by driving the Bears into field goal range on a drive that started at their own.
Meanwhile, Lions quarterback Jared Goff struggled in the final two quarters of the game, scoring just seven points, even though Detroit's offense was in complete control in the first half.
Goff finished the game with 221 yards and two touchdown passes. Both to tight end Matt LaPorta.
The Bears fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron three weeks ago, and his replacement with interim OC Thomas Brown led to improvements, but no wins.
Their offense still needs to function while Williams, the No. 1 draft pick, is surrounded by an inferior batting lineup.
Williams was sacked an NFL-worst 54 times.
Chicago's Everflus has been criticized as the team has lost six straight games, including one game due to a Hail Mary shot and another due to a blocked field goal.
