what do we want? The number of tax inspectors will increase. When do you want it? Ideally a few years ago, but now is fine too. It may not be the most exciting protest song, but it works for me.

My first job at the Ministry of Finance was with a very glamorous team called the Revenue Agency, where we investigated tax evasion and evasion by looking for money stashed in Swiss bank accounts and pretending to be self-employed. It was to be policed.

Perhaps it's less persuasive to others, but I hope that by mentioning this you can join this niche march. Tax liability to HMRC is double what it was before the pandemic. Double your money isn't a bad thing, but it's more than that. First, it matters who you audit. Wealthy people have more complex (and thus more expensive to audit) tax tasks, but that's far more than just the fact that they actually do it. . . Richer.

It may cost three times as much to audit the top 0.1% as the bottom 50%, but every dollar spent raises six times as much. Second, this is just the initial revenue raised and ignores the significant deterrent effect of being audited (those audited tend to pay more taxes for up to 14 years). With that in mind, the authors found that spending an extra $1 on top 10% research yields a whopping $12 return.
