Jets defense ‘hungry’ to improve on ugly interception numbers

The Jets haven't intercepted a pass since Week 5 against the Vikings.

That game was almost two months ago on October 6th.

The Jets' head coach was still Robert Saleh.

It's been a while.

The Jets have some strange stats this season, but none is stranger than the fact that they have only had two interceptions this season, and both came from backup cornerback Brandin Echols.

Sauce Gardner is having none of it. DJ Reed doesn't have that. Michael Carter II doesn't have that.

For a team that is supposed to have an elite defense and an elite secondary, the Jets haven't been forced to make enough picks.

The only team with fewer interceptions is the Giants, who have only one interception.

It was an area the Jets studied during their bye week voluntary scouting.

“A lot of times, turnovers are a byproduct of having a sizable lead in the game and just feeding players, especially if the offense doesn't force the ball down the field to create explosives. Especially when you feel like, “No, come back.'' There's potential for a game. … As we all know, that's where the turnovers tend to happen,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “But at the same time, yeah, we're trying to dig deep into our scheme and sometimes be aggressive enough to force the offense and quarterback to make those types of mistakes, so we're trying to figure out both of those things. We've seriously considered it, and hopefully we'll have the opportunity to implement it into this game.”

Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has played well this season, and could give the Jets a chance to break his interception drought.

“We're definitely hungry for it,” Reed said. “We're playing a lot of guys and we're turning our backs a lot, but we still have to figure out a way to get picks. That's something we definitely want to get to help the team.”

The Jets placed left tackle Tyron Smith on injured reserve Saturday, likely ending his season.

Smith injured his neck against the Cardinals three weeks ago and did not play in the game against the Colts two weeks ago.

Smith, 33, could return for the final two games of the season, but that seems unlikely given the way the Jets' season has gone.

Rookie Olu Fashanu will start in Smith's place.

Office worker Xavier Newman was activated from IR. …RB Kene Nwanwu was promoted from the practice squad.
