Biden Ends Five-Day Thanksgiving Vacation with Flight to Africa

Lame-duck President Joe Biden returned to Washington, D.C., on Saturday night after a five-day vacation on Nantucket Island and headed to Angola within hours.

Biden, who will be in the capital Luanda from Monday to Wednesday, will be the first US president to visit the oil-rich country since it gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

The visit comes 49 days before he hands over power to Republican President-elect Donald Trump.

Earlier, on Thanksgiving Day, the 80-year-old went with his wife Jill and grandson Beau to deliver pumpkin pie to the fire station, according to AFP.

The first lady told firefighters and police officers that her family had been going to Nantucket for Thanksgiving since 1975. The family came to call this outing “Nanatucket” in honor of her central role in establishing the tradition.

Firefighters gave the Bidens baseball caps, and the president put them on and asked his grandson, “What do you think?”

On Friday, the Biden family had lunch at the Brotherhood of Thieves Restaurant and stopped by Nantucket Bookworks, an art gallery and several other stores.

The afternoon ended with a ceremonial Christmas tree lighting and carols, and the crowd took photos and videos of a smiling Biden. AFP reports that the Biden family's vacation this year may have special emotional resonance, as it serves as a respite from past, present and future family turmoil.

Hunter Biden is scheduled to be sentenced in December on three felonies for purchasing guns in 2018, but prosecutors say he did not use or be addicted to illegal drugs. He is said to have made false statements on federal documents. He is also scheduled to be sentenced in December in California on federal tax charges to which he pleaded guilty in September.

The president previously said he had no intention of pardoning or ultimately commuting his son's sentence.

According to AFP, Biden was originally scheduled to visit Africa in October, but was forced to change his plans after Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida.

US official: 'It's not too little, it's not too late' said In an interview with reporters. “After years off the field, I think President Biden has gotten us back on the field.”
