Sen. Chuck Grassley (Iowa), the incoming Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Monday that he had a “good meeting” with Pam Bondi, President-elect Trump's nominee for attorney general.
“President Trump's nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, is a good choice, and I am open to considering her nomination in the new Congress as chair of the Judiciary Committee,” Grassley said. mentioned in the post Social Platform X.
Mr. Grassley's post included the former Florida attorney who announced his selection for the top position at the Justice Department late last month after Mr. Trump's previous nominee, former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), withdrew from consideration. Two photos of him alongside the chief minister were posted.
“For too long, a partisan Department of Justice has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans, and that is no longer the case. Pam will lead the Department to fight crime and make America safe again.” The focus will be refocused on the original purpose of “I've known Pam for many years. She's smart, tough, and America's number one fighter, and I know she'll do a great job as attorney general!” Trump said on Nov. 21. He spoke on Truth Social when announcing the nomination.
The president-elect's announcement that he would nominate Bondi as his attorney general nominee drew a relatively enthusiastic reaction from Republican lawmakers, who have accused him of sexual misconduct and whose attorney general has a troubling relationship with many other Republicans. Mr. Bondi suggested that he would have an easier path to the role than Mr. Gates, who has built a meeting.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she expected Bondi to seek to “defend the Constitution” if confirmed as attorney general.
“Pam Bondi will be able to hold a hearing and make her case clear. When I look at what I'm seeing, is this person a competent person? And they will uphold the law. Are you going to do that? That's very important,” Klobuchar told ABC News in late November.
Bondi also spoke with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on Monday.
“She's a great choice and a long-time friend. She's the right person at the right time. I'm looking forward to next year,” Graham told reporters.
