Heart-pounding body camera footage captures the moment two Colorado lawmakers jumped into action to save two children from a devastating house fire this week.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office released video showing Sheriffs Ryan McConnell and Chris Calderon rushing to the front door of a burning home in Centennial before firefighters arrived around noon Sunday. did.

They yell, “Sheriff's Office!” McConnell radioed that there was “thick black smoke coming out of the front door.”

The sheriff's office said they were unable to enter the backyard through a blocked gate, but deputies were able to gain entry through a neighbor's home and “manually destroyed a portion of the wooden fence.” .

According to the video, officers began yelling for the children, ages 14 and 8, to come to the house after hearing them crying for help.

“Let's jump over this fence. Let's tear down this fence and get the kids outside,” Calderon said.

McConnell climbed over the fence, and Calderon manually peeled back the panels to create an opening for the children to pass through.

Calderon yelled at the girl to “wait a minute,” but the girl cried, saying the younger boy was too big for her to help him alone.

“The room is on fire, the room is on fire,” McConnell carried the boy in his arms as he cried, while Calderon helped the girl climb through an opening in the fence.

“I'm going to hand you over to my buddy, okay?” McConnell told the boy.

The boy was barefoot on the snow-covered ground and fled with the deputy, who picked him up.

At that moment, a fire engine arrived with its siren blaring. Calderon yelled at the girl to stay off the street. The video ended with a shot of firefighters in front of the house as black smoke billowed from the house.

Both deputies suffered smoke inhalation injuries and were treated by paramedics at the scene, the sheriff's office said.
