Trust in the FBI has cratered among Americans, says CNN pollster

CNN polling analyst Harry Enten has documented how Americans have significantly lost trust in the Federal Bureau of Investigation over the past few decades.

President-elect Donald Trump nominated former National Security Council official Kash Patel to head the FBI after loud protests from many on the left and some establishment Republicans.

“This is the lowest number in this century.”

Enten said polls show a majority believe the FBI is doing a good or excellent job, up from about 59% in 2014 to 57% in 2019. , dropping to 50% in 2022 and a shocking 41% in 2024.

“Look where we are today, kindly, only 41% of Americans think the FBI is doing an excellent or good job. This is the lowest number in this century.” he said. “The bottom line is there was clearly an investigation into Donald Trump during the Trump administration. It went down a little bit then, but look at the drop since January 6th. 50%, now 41%. That's very kind of you.”

Enten said low trust in the FBI means major changes to the agency are likely to meet little resistance.

“I think Mr. Patel has real reason to believe that the American people will abide by the changes he might make to the FBI, and he feels that Donald Trump can make these changes. “There's a reason why,” he explained.

Even though the FBI has come under fire for its investigation into President Trump's alleged misconduct, it has also been criticized for its investigation into then-candidate Hillary Clinton ahead of the 2016 election.

Enten posted CNN video on his social media accounts.

In announcing his decision, President Trump said Patel would tackle human trafficking, organized crime and America's growing crime crisis.

“Mr. Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and 'America First' fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, upholding justice, and protecting the American people,” he wrote on social media. said. “He played a pivotal role in debunking Russia, Russia, and Russian disinformation, and served as a champion of truth, accountability, and the Constitution.”
