President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday named imprisoned former aide Peter Navarro as senior trade and manufacturing adviser in the incoming White House, a staunch ally who will help implement his sweeping tariff plans.
Navarro served as a trade advisor in the White House during President Trump's first term. As a result, Navarro was ultimately sentenced to four months in prison for failing to respond to a Congressional subpoena related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
Just hours after being released from prison in July, Navarro received an enthusiastic reception from Republicans during a prime-time speech endorsing Trump's second term at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Ta.
President Trump: “I'm pleased to announce that Peter Navarro, who has been treated horribly by the deep state, or whatever you want to call it, will be my senior advisor for trade and manufacturing.'' Posted on Truth Social Mr. Navarro announced his new role. “During my first term, there were few people as effective and persistent as Peter when it came to my two sacred rules: buy American, hire American. He helped us renegotiate unfair trade agreements like the KORUS trade agreement and moved all tariff and trade actions forward quickly…”
The president-elect added that the senior adviser position will allow Navarro to use his experience and “extensive policy analysis and media skills” to advance President Trump's trade policies.
The introduction of tariffs was a key part of President Trump's re-election campaign. In an executive order signed on his first day last week, he imposed 25% tariffs on all products from U.S. allies Canada and Mexico and threatened to raise tariffs on China.
The president-elect went on to praise Navarro in a post on Truth Social.
“Peter is not only a distinguished Harvard-trained economist, he is also the renowned author of more than a dozen best-selling books on strategic management and unfair trade. He did a great job for the American people in his first term, and as senior advisor, Peter will go the extra mile to protect American workers and truly make American manufacturing great again. It will be given to me,” he said.
Mr. Navarro was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress. One charge was for failing to turn over documents related to the January 6 investigation, and the other was for failing to take a deposition during a now-defunct House committee that was investigating the riot at the Capitol that day. It's a sin.
The same sentence was handed down last year to former White House adviser Steve Bannon, who was also found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress.
