Disney released the second trailer for the (at least) $300 million live-action movie snow white After Tuesday's remake, thousands of commenters tore the two-minute ad to shreds within hours. Many of the more than 12,000 critics pointed to Snow White actor Rachel Zegler's post-election comments, in which she urged those who voted for President-elect Donald Trump to “never have peace.” I was hoping for something I didn't know.
“Rachel Zegler – people need kindness,” one commenter quoted the movie, adding, “Rachel Zegler too – over half of America may never know peace.” .
Zegler, of course, apologized for the “fuck Donald Trump” rant, but then went on to suggest that Zegler's supporters were part of a “serious disease in this country.”
Is it any wonder, then, why some commenters wanted the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot) to win over Snow White?
It's a disastrous deja vu for Disney. This trailer was released just four months after the first trailer, which also received poor reviews. “It has about 6.7 million views on YouTube, and down votes outnumber up votes by a factor of 10. 10 times — times,” Breitbart's John Nolte wrote at the time. “Only 69,000 people out of 6.7 million bothered to vote yes on the trailer. An astonishing 735,000 people voted against it.”
And the passage of time (lol) hasn't been kind to the first trailer. There are now twice as many votes against it (1.4 million votes) and only 30,000 more votes in favor.
If you've forgotten about this movie and the scandal surrounding its release, you're probably not alone. In fact, Zegler initially spent his time promoting the remake by dismissing the original version of the beloved 1937 classic as sexist and outdated. Disney removed the dwarf from the film after famous dwarf actor Peter Dinklage scoffed at the idea of casting a dwarf in the role of a dwarf. The studio then embarked on costly reshoots, replacing the seven dwarfs with “magical beings.”
And Zegler's decision to proclaim “Liberate Palestine” on social media while promoting the first trailer in August. Co-star Gadot, an Israeli Defense Forces veteran and former Miss Israel, has not publicly commented on Zegler's inflammatory comments.
