Mexico's Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero announced that a Mexican federal judge who ordered the release of one of the Gulf Cartel's top leaders is the subject of a corruption investigation.
At a recent press conference, the country's top prosecutor explained the case and how his agency decided to open an investigation against Judge Gregorio Salazar. A judge recently granted Gulf Cartel boss Jose Alfredo “El Contador” Cárdenas free bail. Gertz Manero said Salazar was being investigated for “crimes against the administration of justice.”
During the press conference and in a series of prepared statements and subsequent information packets provided to the press, Gertz-Manero highlighted the allegations made by prosecutors against Cárdenas and the corroboration that Salazar allegedly ignored. Explained the evidence. He also argued that prosecutors did not support their case.
As reported by Breitbart Texas, on November 20, Salazar argued that prosecutors had not proven cause for the extradition request and that there was no need to detain him because he was not a flight risk. ordered his release.
Cárdenas is known as the leader of the Escorpiones faction of the Gulf Cartel and is credited with hundreds of enforced disappearances, murders and kidnappings. Under El Contador's leadership, the Gulf Cartel experienced a series of turf wars and spread much violence throughout the Tamaulipas border region.
Breitbart Texas previously reported that authorities arrested El Contador in Matamoros, Tamaulipas state in 2022 and flew him to Mexico City, where he was staying until his release.
The man known as El Contador was arrested twice, in 2019 and 2018. Each time, he was able to be released under questionable circumstances.
