A Canadian man jumped to protect his wife after a dramatic ambush by a polar bear that charged at her in rural Ontario.
According to the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Department, the unidentified couple left their home around 5 a.m. Tuesday to look for their dog.
They encountered a feisty polar bear in the driveway and lunged at the woman.

Police said the fast-moving man jumped on the mammal to prevent the attack.
“The husband jumped and the woman slid to the ground.”[ed] “He climbed on top of the bear to prevent the attack. The bear then attacked the male, causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his arms and legs,” police said in a statement.

A neighbor came with a gun and shot the bear several times. After being shot, he fled into nearby woods, where he died.

Police said the man was transported to a local nursing station where he was treated for his injuries.
“We continue to patrol the area to ensure there are no other bears roaming the area,” police said.
