Knicks surprise Cavs in Game 1 as James Harden faces criticism

Cavaliers Fall to Knicks in Game 1

James Harden’s defensive role came under scrutiny during the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Game 1 loss against the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers had a comfortable lead, going up by as much as 22 points, but Jalen Brunson spearheaded a remarkable comeback for the Knicks, leading them to a 115-104 victory. Brunson scored 38 points, including a critical bucket in the fourth quarter while Harden was marking him.

Harden managed to briefly put Cleveland in the lead, but Brunson quickly responded to tie it up. Cleveland’s Sam Merrill had a chance for a game-winning shot late in the fourth, yet his attempt bounced off the rim.

In an impressive overtime display, New York outscored Cleveland 14-3, sealing a surprising victory.

Harden posted 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists, but also had six turnovers, which contributed to a minus-6 rating. This game intensified existing criticism of Harden’s defensive performance, a recurring theme throughout his career.

Knicks head coach Mike Brown mentioned that attacking Harden was part of their game plan. “It’s not a secret; we were focused on him,” Brown said. “You have to adapt to what’s happening on the court.” He acknowledged the strategy of leveraging Jalen against Harden, which had some success.

Harden, in turn, recognized Brunson’s skill down the stretch, saying, “He’s a tough player. We need to ensure he sees the body when he’s being guarded.” He emphasized the need for team support in defense.

Cavaliers’ coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged that they tried to make some defensive adjustments, but they ultimately fell flat. “We sent two to him, tried to get the ball out of his hands,” he noted. “James was solid for most of the game, but defensively, he struggled in the fourth quarter.” Despite that, he didn’t consider benching Harden. “He’s one of our top defenders,” Atkinson stated, expressing his trust in Harden’s abilities.

Game 2 is set for Thursday night at 8 PM ET at Madison Square Garden.
