“We are in the fight of our lives” against the incoming administration, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) told CNN's “The Situation Room” Thursday.
Raskin said, “We are in the fight of our lives, Wolf. We have an incoming administration that has vowed to turn the Justice Department into an instrument of political retribution and retaliation and persecution of individual Americans. This, of course, is Donald Tora, who doesn't seem to care about constitutional boundaries and threatens to seize funds earmarked for certain purposes by Congress and use them for other purposes. But he did so during his first administration, when he diverted money from other legally appropriated roles to building a wall in Mexico, promising that Mexicans would pay for it. Of course, that promise was broken. Neither the Mexican people nor the Mexican government paid for it, so they tried to direct the funds elsewhere.”
He added, “So I took an oath to never put the Constitution of the United States in any kind of shredding or processing equipment. We're going to protect the separation of powers. We're going to honor the First Amendment. , we're going to protect the right of people to assemble. We're going to protect the lawful privileges of Congress. We're going to protect the independence of the judiciary, and that's our job. It’s the first line of defense.”
