Florida man who was half-naked, ‘high on meth’ breaks into home, grabs carpet cleaner

A Florida man is accused of breaking into a house that was found without grass and carrying carpet cleaner, but claims he doesn't remember because he was on methamphetamine.

Austin Alexander Smith, 23, was charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and booked into the Polk County Jail.

Residents of a home on Southwest 6th Street in Winter Haven, Florida, were suddenly awakened by a loud bang on their front door at approximately 1:36 a.m. Thursday, according to Winter Haven Police.

Residents later found Smith in the living room wearing only a shirt, no pants or shoes, and in his hand was a carpet cleaner that belonged to the residents.

One of them yelled at Smith, who dropped the carpet cleaner and ran out the door.

A few minutes later, police spotted a person matching Smith's description walking in the area of ​​Avenue M and Southwest 5th Street. Officers took the suspect into custody, who was later identified by a resident as the suspect who had broken into the home.

Police said Smith entered the residence by kicking down the door.
