Diaz, Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller, and Corporal Luis Paez were killed on Nov. 21 when they were struck by a Jeep SUV while their motorcycles were parked on the shoulder of Southern Boulevard.

Waller and Paes were pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the accident, while Diaz was in critical condition and underwent surgery at a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“When a family goes through a tragedy like this, you don't always know what they need,” said Charlie's mother, Christina. “What Charlie has really done for us is to allow our family to focus on the next moment, the next hour, the next day and not have to think about all the other burdens. It has given me the ability to contribute to the community as well.”
